I see people as unique sentient human beings not defined by the issues that bring them to counselling.
Our lives are a series of experiences with each having it unique expressions of thoughts, feelings and behaviours of differing intensity in our memories which also include those we have absorbed from others and our environment.
In the beginning, I seek simply to hear about aspects of your life, your experiences, thoughts and feelings in whatever order and detail that you feel comfortable experiencing and revealing in the here and now of our time together.
The emergence of feelings of safety and trust over time allows the counselling relationship to explore more deeply the key psychological issues that you seek to address and in doing so to improve your wellbeing.
People who see me as a person, a counsellor, a therapist who has the potential to help them address whatever is troubling their psychological well-being. Yes, there is a focus on working with people from the trans and gender diverse communities which can including their families and allies which is due, in part, to my own personal trans history which culminated in my transition over 14 years ago.
The challenges many of my clients face relate to living with depression; anxiety; stress; personality issues including Borderline Personality; early developmental trauma; interpersonal & relationship issues; alcohol and substance dependence; impulsive behaviours, self-harm and suicidality; career issues, including redundancy, work stress and retirement; and/or, loss and grief.
My counselling style is person centred and is outlined in the section 'Counselling Approach'.
